Online Violence Against Women in India
As digital platforms become increasingly central to public life, online violence against women has emerged as a major barrier to women’s equal and meaningful participation in digital spaces.
In its submission to the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, “Online Violence Against Women in India,” DAHRD examines different forms of technology-facilitated gender-based violence affecting women in India, including online harassment, cyberstalking, doxxing, threats, non-consensual sharing of intimate images, deepfakes and coordinated abuse.
The submission analyses gaps in India’s existing legal and institutional framework, challenges in accessing justice, and the particular risks faced by women from marginalised communities. It also considers the role of digital platforms and the ways in which online abuse can restrict women’s participation in public and political life.
DAHRD sets out recommendations aimed at strengthening legal protections, improving law-enforcement and judicial responses, making reporting mechanisms more accessible, increasing platform accountability, addressing the digital divide and ensuring stronger support for survivors of online violence.
