Excluded by Design: Tech Regulation’s Racial Bias
March 17, 2025 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Lawmakers are shaping and implementing the EU’s digital policy with increasing emphasis on safeguarding the rights of EU residents. However, the safety and rights of minorities and those on the move like migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers are compromised. This oversight has a devastating impact on digital rights, human rights, and non-discrimination. In this meet-up, we especially invite voices from minority and migrant communities to join our exploration of questions such as:
- What role do technologies like AI have in the regulation of migration/ the lives and freedoms of people of colour/people on the move?
- Thinking of the Toeslagenaffaire in the Netherlands – how do we prevent a repeat of this and other situations in which algorithms can lead to racialised profiles that criminalise migrants and other minorities?
- How can we increase consideration for the needs of migrants, refugees, minorities and other vulnerable communities when regulating technology? AND
- How should legislators and regulators engage with these communities when considering the impact of technology on migrant rights?
This event takes place on Monday the 17th of March from 19.30 to 21.30 CET as part of Pakhuis de Zwijger’s Week Against Racism!
